5 Steps to Choosing the Right Dentist in Costa Rica

Maybe you are planning to travel to Costa Rica for your vacation and at the same time get some dental work done since you know that it is much more affordable in Costa Rica ?. Perhaps you are already on vacation and you are suddenly tormented by a toothache or other dental emergency, but how do you go about choosing the right dentist in Costa Rica?

There are a lot of dentists in Costa Rica, close to five-thousand actually, which translates into approximately 1 for every 1054 people when the recommended relation according to the World Health Organization is of 1 for every 3500; so picking the right dentist can prove tricky.

Here are some tips to help you choose the right dentist for you:

1) Determine what service or treatment you need,  do you need just a general dentist that you can see for a dental cleaning and a cavity? Or do you have a specific condition that requires a specialist such as a All on 4 treatment?. This is an important aspect to consider since just like physicians, dentists have different specialties, and if you have a particular dental problem you want it addressed by an expert. If you are not sure, then going for a dental clinic which offers a wide range of services and has a large team of specialists might be the best option.

2) Filter by location: Once you know exactly what kind of expert you need, your next filter can be location, you want to choose a doctor that is relatively close to where you are, keep in mind some treatments require more than one visit.

3) Check credentials: Once you have narrowed down your picks check the doctor´s credentials. In Costa Rica, all dentists have to be registered in the Colegio de Cirujanos Dentistas, (National College of Dental Surgeons), this guarantees that a doctor has an active license, it also shows if they are trained and qualified to practice a particular specialty. Checking on this can be done online through the website: colegiodentistas.org

4) Call and Head to the Clinic : Sometimes a simple call can tell you a lot about the dentists overall service. Ask the questions you require answers to over the phone, if you like the information you are given ask if you can go in for a consultation, some clinics won´t charge you for this, this is a chance for you to get to know the clinic and the doctor on a more personal and professional level, ask as many questions as needed regarding the treatment you need along with a detailed price breakdown of the procedure you require. Remember cheaper isn’t always better, make sure you are comparing apples to apples.

5) Technology and Service: Dentistry like most other health related specialties has advanced tremendously when it comes to the use of technology, this allows the patient to be more comfortable, experience less pain if any at all, it also helps with diagnosis and speeds up some treatments.

¨It is important for patients to understand that just like with any other service, they are entitled to ask all the questions they need to ask, their doctor has to give them a complete explanation of their condition and suggested treatment and alternatives, and they should get a detail budget, many dentists fail in these aspects causing deception to their clients. Making sure the client is happy in every way should be a priority for all doctors¨,
